Introduction to Our New Album – Porgy
Discovering the Hidden Essence in Gershwin’s Tune: Tony Overwater (bass) & Atzko Kohashi (piano) / featuring Michael Moore (reeds) and Sebastiaan Kaptein (drums)

Dear Music Lovers,
Originating in 14th-century Noh theater, the Japanese concept of Shuhari — articulated by Zeami — describes the stages of artistic mastery: Shu 守 (to preserve), Ha 破 (to break), and Ri 離 (to transcend).
Our new recording follows this quiet arc: rooted in tradition, deconstructed through experimentation, and ultimately reimagined into something uniquely our own — a meditative space where form dissolves into essence.
While inspired by George Gershwin’s “I Loves You, Porgy,” our approach was not simply to improvise on his work. Instead, we sought to create variants — transformative interpretations born from this iconic piece. We reimagined the melody, harmonic structure, tonality, and rhythm, weaving our own ideas throughout.
Each piece stands out as distinct in character, yet all are intrinsically connected to “I Loves You, Porgy.”
We hope you’ll sense the spirit behind the notes — something timeless, yet newly born.
The album Porgy will be released on May 3rd by Jazz in Motion Records, and on June 4th by Studio Songs (Japan only).

14世紀の日本の能楽に端を発し、世阿弥が提唱したとされる「守破離（しゅはり）」という概念をご存知でしょうか？「守（しゅ）」は伝統を守ること、「破（は）」はその型を破ること、そして「離（り）」はそれを超越すること、という芸術的な段階を表した言葉だそうです。
私たちの新しいアルバム 「Porgy 」は、この静かな流れに沿っています。伝統に根ざし、実験的な試みによって解体され、最終的には私たち独自のものへと再構築されました。それは、形式が本質へと溶け込む瞑想的な空間です。
ジョージ・ガーシュウィンの I Loves You, Porgy にインスパイアされながらも、私たちのアプローチは単なる即興演奏ではありません。この象徴的な曲から生まれたバリエーションを創造し、メロディー、和声構造、音色、リズムを再構築し、私たち自身のアイデアを織り込みました。
各楽曲はそれぞれ独自のキャラクターを持ちながらも、すべてが I Loves You, Porgy とどこかで本質的につながっています。
